On Saturday 14th October, Paul Morris and members of his team from P&R Morson and Morson FM joined former England cricketer, Ashley Giles and his wife Stine at their third annual ball for The Giles’ Trust at the iconic Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Ashley and Stine set up the charity in October 2015, alongside Professor Cruickshank, Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, to raise money to fund vital research into brain tumours at the hospital following Stine’s successful treatment.
When Ashley and Stine set out on this venture, it was agreed that their first challenge would be to raise enough money to recruit a dedicated Clinical Research Nurse. There is now a nurse in post undertaking this role and her salary is paid by The Giles’ Trust, enabling those patients who have exhausted all standard treatment options, without success, the opportunity to access a clinical trial. These trials could potentially offer a patient extended life expectancy, a better quality of life, or, what we all ultimately hope for, enable patients to get to the point of cure. Brain tumour research remains underfunded in comparison to other diseases and illnesses funded by the NHS, even though brain tumours are now the most common malignancy and cause of death in children. Survival rates across all areas are only marginally better now than they were 40 years ago.
P&R Morson and Morson FM are proud to have supported The Giles’ Trust “Right Royal Ball” as it became the most successful to date, raising over £41,000 nett – an incredible and humbling achievement. The event is organised personally by Stine and three friends, all volunteers, ensuring every penny raised goes directly to the charity.
Over 300 guests enjoyed an evening of variety and splendour including themed décor, surprise guests, the Queen, music from actor and singer songwriter Julius Cowdray. Business woman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Caprice was the guest speaker who also joined guests for dinner. Her story reminded everyone of the reality and impact on patients and their families and what they endure whilst battling this terrible disease and the importance of raising valuable funds for research.
Since its launch in October 2015 an incredible £695,000 has been raised for The Giles’ Trust, the fund is now getting fantastic on-going support – may this success long continue.
